Alumni Profile: Karen Hicks
Meet Karen Hicks, a proud Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State) alumna, born and raised in Dallas, where she still lives today. As the youngest of four, she grew up in a close-knit family and has been married to her husband, Russel, for 28 years. Together, they have three grown children: Kamryn, Ashtyn, and Jackson.
Karen chose Texas State for its beautiful San Marcos setting, its welcoming size, and the strong family ties—both of her sisters were Bobcats, and her best friend also attended. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Math and joined Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, serving on the Executive Board and enjoying intramural sports.
Her time at TXST was full of growth, leadership, and lifelong friendships. She credits the laid-back atmosphere, the river, and the campus community for shaping who she is today.
After graduation, Karen taught 5th grade gifted and talented students for three years. When her first child was born, she stepped away from the classroom to focus on raising her family. Once her kids graduated, she pursued a passion for interior design and now works as a project manager in Dallas.
Karen sees her TXST education—and her background in teaching—as the foundation for her success in leadership, communication, and creativity. She encourages current students to step out of their comfort zones, get involved, and make the most of every opportunity.
Today, she finds joy in bringing design visions to life and feels most proud of the life she’s built: staying in touch with former students and raising three grounded, successful adults. Inspired by her faith, father, and family, Karen continues to grow, dream big, and stay connected to the Bobcat spirit that started it all.
